Accommodation

Once you have landed in Canada, it is not advisable to stay for a long time in a hotel, unless, of course, you have the means to do so, is convenient and at a competitive price.
We can suggest to temporarily rent a furnished apartment or room on a weekly or monthly basis, situated in a neighborhood that is relatively central to facilitate looking for a more appropriate accommodation in tune with your needs.

Searching for the first dwelling

Before renting, take time to explore the surrounding areas and the city neighborhoods where you might want to live. Take into consideration your needs and your financial position. A house that is too far from your children's school or your work might result in additional expenses.

When we talk about housing in Canada we speak in these terms:

  • 1 ½ (a bachelor)
  • 2 ½, (a bedroom. with a living room)
  • 3 ½, (a bedroom, with living and dining room)
  • 4 ½ (two bedrooms with living and dining room)

* ½ counts as a bathroom
* All have kitchen, although size varies considerably.
* Equipped or semi furnished- basic appliances are included, such as refrigerator and kitchen
* Heated or not heated. Heating might be included, but not always.

In the winter months, make sure to rent an apartment with heating included.
The amount of rent paid must not be higher than 30% of your income.
You must make sure that you can meet all your financial obligations at the beginning of each month.

Rental costs

Rental costs vary from region to region, according to the location. For example, a 3 ½ apartment in downtown Montreal may cost aproximately CAN$ 600 monthly, while rents in less accessible areas might cost aproximately CAN$ 420 monthly.

Once you have rented your apartment you may obtain your telephone number by contacting the nearest Bell Canada service center. Bring your passport, your permanent residence visa and a credit card, if you own one. You might be asked, in some cases, to make a cash deposit.
