Health
Health services are free and so are the majority of prescription
drugs.
Education
Elementary and secondary education is government funded
and therefore free. University studies are subsidized by
the government and great opportunities are available to
obtain scholarships and student loans. Average yearly university
costs for Canadians and immigrants alike are CAN$ 2,500
per year, although foreign students fees are usually above
CAN$ 10,000 per year.
Benefits
for Immigrants
The government also offers its immigrant population programs
free of cost, in order to better their levels of French
or English, depending on the province of residence of the
immigrant. Resident immigrants that take part in these programs
on a full time basis may request from the government a subsidy
for their living expenses during the duration of the course.
This sum consists of CAN$ 490.00 monthly and an additional
CAN$ 35.00 for transportation.
Fiscal
benefits for children
The Federal Government provides low income families with
children below the age of 18 with a monthly allowance for
living expenses that could be as high as CAN$ 3,050 per
year for an eligible family with two children.
Social
Assistance
Consists of financial help for persons and families whose
revenues are inadequate to cover the basic necessities.
For example: A single person can obtain CAN$ 522.42 and
a couple CAN$ 802.00
Retirement
Plan
All citizens and residents, whether they contributed or
not, have the right to the pension plan. The non-contributing
residents receive the monthly sum of CAN$ 775 from the age
of 65.
Unemployment
Insurance
A government program designed for those that have worked
a minimum required time and who, for reasons beyond their
control, have lost their work. Thus, the government calculates
a monthly payment based on 50% of the owed wages for an
unemployment period of 12 months maximum
